Antioxidant-Rich Cacao Face Mask
This face mask smells good enough to eat. And you can, actually. Every ingredient is edible and easy to find. I use this face mask for anti-aging properties, but it can also has properties that are helpful to treat acne, dry/inflamed skin, eczema, or dull skin. I use it about once a week. Remember that your skin absorbs 60% of what you apply to it, so toxin-free skincare is very important to me.
Also, I'm really big on skincare from the inside out. All of these 4 ingredients can be consumed separately and still have positive effects on your health and skin. Bananas and avocados are self-explanatory. Chaga powder, I often mix into my smoothies, and Cacao powder, I mix into my coffee every single morning.
I use a fork to mash up the banana (1/2 of a full banana) and avocado (1/4 of a full avocado), then add in the Chaga powder (1/4 tsp) and Cacao powder (1/2 tsp). I apply to my face, leave on until it dries and wash off. You can also apply this to other parts of your body that you have problem skin. If you have extra, store in refrigerator and use within a few days.
Bananas contain so many skin-friendly vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
-Potassium hydrates and moisturizes dehydrated skin.
-B-Vitamins protect against free radicals that cause oxidative stress and premature aging.
-Vitamin A helps to heal dry and/or withered skin. Vitamin A also helps to fade acne scars and dark spots.
-Zinc fights germs that can cause acne.
-Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production. It also fights free radicals.
-Vitamin E gives some sun protection, protecting skin from UV damage. It also slows down the process of aging and fights free radicals. Vitamin E is in a ton of skin-care products!
-Amino Acid nourishes skin by strengthening connective tissue to help maintain skin elasticity and strength.
(Hint: if you eat them they can provide the same benefits for your skin from the inside out!)
I love this cacao powder. It's organic, contains no additives, and I stir some into my coffee every morning to give it a health boost and a rich chocolatey taste. Make sure you use pure cacao like this one, cocoa powder is cacao with a lot of additives, and won't work very well for this.
Cacao powder is packed with antioxidants.
-Flavanols provide protection against environmental stresses. Studies have shown that consuming cacao actually provides significant photo protection, and therefore may be effective at protecting skin from harmful UV rays. Studies on external use effecting sun protection have not been done.
-Flavanols also support blood flow, and help maintain elasticity of skin. Consuming cacao internally helps maintain elasticity of arteries and veins and protects the heart.
-Zinc protects skins lipids which play a vital role in producing collagen.
-Iron which helps activate B vitamins, which are found in Cacao, as well as other ingredients in this face mask.
-Cacao also contains magnesium, calcium, beta-carotene and omega 6 fatty acids which can all be beneficial for your skin, and help to maintain a healthy glow.
Chaga Powder is made from Chaga mushrooms. It is incredibly important to use sustainably harvested Chaga powder. I prefer using this one, because it is locally (Maine, USA) and sustainably harvested.
Chaga is helpful against skin conditions such as acne, bug bites, allergic reactions, rashes, dermatitis, itching, rosacea, and eczema.
-Enzymes in Chaga mushrooms aid in breaking down of dirt and toxins.
-Superoxide Diamatuse is naturally occurring in human skin. However, as we age, it starts to diminish, causing fine lines and wrinkles. Chaga contains superoxide diamatuse, giving it anti-aging properties.
-Contain Vitamin E and Potassium, as in bananas. The outermost layer of skin easily absorbs these vitamins and minerals.
-Antioxidants that may help soothe dry, irritated skin, help with eczema or acne due to anti-inflammatory effects.
-Fatty acids and oleic acid can help skin heal more quickly. This is helpful with acne scars, fading acne or pimples.
